Affordable housing is not a benefit just for the very poor; it's something that can tie a city together. D.C. has some progressive housing policies, but it's clear the need is greater.

In early January, Tommy Wells was appointed Acting Director of the District Department of the Environment (DDOE).  A few weeks after he took over, Elevation DC sat down to talk with him about his vision for his department and his priorities for the coming years.  

Elevation DC highlights the city's most revolutionary projects, from tiny houses to big boxes. This time next year, the District's gonna look a lot different.

What does the future hold for the District? Elevation D.C. looks forward for our last issue of the year.

What does a great neighborhood need? Parks? Retail? Grocery stores? Elevation DC's panel discussion with former D.C. mayor Anthony Williams and other experts, in a space overlooking the Capitol Riverfront, aimed to figure that out.

Not many people know the Anacostia the way that Jorge Bogantes Montero does. As a natural resources specialist with the Anacostia Watershed Society, Montero is aware of the places where legacy pollutants form a troubled mix of dirty water.  But he has also found places along the shores where wild persimmon and pawpaw fruits can still be found dangling from the limbs of native trees each fall.

A panel discussion October 21 will examine our changing D.C., the affordable housing crisis, and some solutions--as well as how newcomers and long-time residents are finding ways to live in harmony.

The nationwide competiton to design an elevated park over the Anacostia has reached its home stretch, with four finalists unveiling their designs Thursday. Any would be a welcome addition to D.C.

Public art by world-renowned artists will temporarily transform all eight wards of the city, with events and exhibits running from September through December. 

With four production breweries in the District and many new brewpubs open or soon to open, it's fair to say that D.C. is experiencing a microbrewery megaboom. But rather than pit new brews against each other, success seems to lift all brews.

Six teams will go on to the next stage of the design competition to build an elevated park across the Anacostia.

The proposed elevated park across the Anacostia would be a first for D.C. With a national design competition for the bridge kicking off, Elevation DC checked in on the park and its goals of fostering economic development, community health, and a cleaner river.
