Office building on site of "Brutalist atrocity" tops out downtown

Octagon no more: this building replaces the Brutalist church downtown

The JBG Companies announced today that its new office building at 900 Sixteenth Street NW has topped out a year after breaking ground. The nine-story, 125,000-square-foot building will have offices, restaurant space with outdoor seating, a fitness center and underground parking, as well as space for the Third Church of Christ, Scientist, whose Brutalist building had stood at the site since the 1960s. During the high-profile fight to replace it, the giant octagonal building was called a "Brutalist atrocity" (and likely worse).

Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Cooper Carry, Inc. are the architects of the new building. JBG is partnering with ICG Properties and Rittenhouse Partners on the building, which is expected to open in early 2016.
