NoMa's first yoga studio will open Oct. 15

Participants in a free yoga class organized by YogaNoma, which is opening its indoor studio Oct 15

Coming to 1200 First St NE: a yoga studio that watches out for your pocketbook as well as for your form in downward dog.

Slated to open next Wednesday, Yoga NoMa is billing itself as a full-service yoga and mat-based Pilates studio for newbies and seasoned practitioners alike.

Construction on the 900 square-foot space began in July, according to Rachel Davis, director of marketing and events at the NoMA BID, which is helping to underwrite the new studio.

“There are no yoga/Pilates studios in the neighborhood, and we have long known from surveys and conversations with residents and office workers that this is a great need,” she says.

With drop-in classes as low as $10 for an hour, Yoga NoMa seeks to be “as inclusive and community-oriented as possible,” Davis says. The donated design and space are what makes those low prices possible.

Principal Real Estate Investors and Polinger Shannon and Luchs donated the space for Yoga NoMa, while Ayers Saint Gross provided pro bono design consulting. The studio manager is Julia Romano, a professional yoga teacher who tweets @Em_Power_Yoga.

Yoga NoMa is currently seeking volunteers to help with check-in, studio cleaning and others tasks in exchange for unlimited free classes.

In the runup to the opening, free yoga classes are available through October 10. Additionally, yogis who sign up before the official opening can get 30 days of unlimited classes for the special rate of $30. The regular monthly fee will be $90.
